Giving new life to the mambo, the hard bop and Jimi Hendrix 'Crosstown-traffi c' THFO shows us that groovylicious is the very core of their musical being. THFO is a sure shot for the dancefl oor but of course keeping it acoustic and pure! THFO was founded in 2005 by Jerker Kluge and Florian Riedl. The intention was to make acoustic music to dance to, without DJ´s, electronics or samples! The heavy and rough rhythms are played by drums, double-bass, congas and piano, supporting the wonderful horn-lines by sax and trombone. The high musicality of the 6 members of THFO and the original sound of their instruments assure the most authentic perfomance with absolute high-energy playing

Masters Of Groove • Meet Dr. No

 

Masters of Groove is an all-star project featuring organist Reuben Wilson, drummer Bernard Purdie, and two considerably younger, still up-and-coming musicians -- guitarist Grant Green, Jr. and bassist Tarus Mateen. (Mateen is known in the jazz world as an upright player, but here he plays five-string electric.) The concept is simple: music from or inspired by Dr. No, the very first James Bond film, released in 1962. The group does justice to the movie's Jamaican flavor, dipping into reggae and calypso rhythms on "III Blind Mice," "Jump Up," and, of course, "Under the Mango Tree," a melody that surfaces time and again in the film. But there's also a steady supply of funk, as there must be when veteran soul-jazzer Wilson and R&B session master Purdie are on hand. The nicest twist is "Bond II" -- the universally recognized Bond theme over a laid-back 12/8 feel that has come to be known as the "Purdie shuffle." Wilson's own "Crab Key Lullaby," a brief and juicy organ solo finale, closes out the album on a swinging note. All along, one wonders whether they'll give listeners that classic Bond signoff: a sustained E minor/major ninth chord. Sure enough, it's the last sound you hear, sampled right from the soundtrack. This sort of danceable, improv-based worldbeat will certainly appeal to the jam band crowd. The playing is excellent, but some of these loosely structured tunes go on well after the point has been made.

And a repertoire mixing the sounds of New Orleans, Chicago, New York and Memphis into their own interpretations of renowned favourites and hidden unknown gems that the band searches out for their set.

The Band Are:

Hammond Organ - Gary ‘Groove Keys’ Jones. Gary is well known around Melbourne’s Jazz and Blues scenes for his skill and passion with the Hammond Organ. Gary can also be found as promoter of the ‘Hammond Sessions’ at ‘BAR 303’ in Northcote, Melbourne. Gary performs with Continental Robert from the legendary soul brothers ‘The Dynamic Hepnotics’, when on tour.

Sax - On sax is one of Melbourne’s most in-demand horn players, Jeff Mead. Besides featuring in some of Melbourne’s top big swing bands, Jeff plays regularly in The Andrea Marr Band and other well-established Blues acts.

Vocals and Percussion - Front man, soul and jazz singer, Peter Jackson has performed with Paul Kelly, The Australian Blues Brothers Show’, ‘Grand Wazoo’, ‘The Swing Genies’ and other funk, soul and jazz bands on the Australian circuit. Originally, Peter led his own bands including early 90’s popular Melbourne pub soulsters, ‘Sticky Soul’. In this line up, Peter’s percussion adds a touch of Latin to the groove rhythms with congas and a range of Latin hand instruments.

Drums - Consummate and well respected jazz drummer, Nick Mierisch. Nick has been the rhythmic force behind many jazz and soul funk bands around town over the last 30 years.

Jimmy McGriff & Hank Crawford • Right Turn On Blue

There was virtually no prior planning for this meeting between organist Jimmy McGriff and altoist Hank Crawford, but none was needed. The veterans had already recorded four prior albums together, so they simply jammed through blues, ballads and a few basic originals without any difficulty; Crawford could play this material blindfolded. McGriff sets the grooves expertly with his foot-pedal basswork, with assistance from guitarist Rodney Jones and drummer Jesse Hameen. The overall result is an enthusiastic session of foot-tapping music. No real surprises occur, but lovers of hard-swinging organ combos have nothing to complain about.

Judd Nielsen • Blossom Showers

Hammond organ and piano are Judd's specialty. He has performed with a plethora of artists and bands spanning different genres in New Orleans and New York. Over the years his musical experiences have included Walter "Wolfman" Washington and the Roadmasters, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, Melvin Sparks, Big Daddy Kane, Harry Fraud, Akir, 86 Supreme and Marvin Horn. Currently he is working with a new organ trio including guitarist "King" Solomon Hicks and drummer Austin Williamson. The band has a new recoding out now featuring all original material by Judd entitled Blossom Showers.

Album Notes

The organ's place in our culture has many expressions - celebratory, fiery, hipnotic, exuberant, joyous, sad, playful, earthy. To some it's church, to some it's the old roller rink, to some Dave "Baby" Cortez with the top down and a full tank of gas. To some, the seventh inning stretch at a ball game. To jazz fans, it's simply one of the most soulful ways to get the musical message across.

Thomas "Fats" Waller played organ at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem where his father was preacher. A young Count Basie would accompany the silent films on the organ at the theatre in Red bank, New Jersey where he grew up. Some folks are lucky enough to remember bars with the organ raised high in the middle of the room where nightly wall sweats were standard fare. Or maybe a visit to Rudy Van Gelder's famed recording studio where countless classic organ records were made, where the player stepped up into that magnificent instrument - like a 1957 Chrysler Imperial, complete with fins and tire kit.

For the rest of us there's the sense memory that touches through records made by Jimmy Smith, Groove Holmes, Milt Buckner, Shirley Scott, Jimmy McGriff, Charles Earland, "Wild" Bill Davis, Bill Doggett, "Brother" Jack McDuff, Sonny Phillips and Larry Young, among others of note.

But this is no museum piece. Rhoda Scott, Joey Defrancesco, Doug Carn, Mike Ledonne, Radam Schwartz, Kyle Koehler and Jared Gold pay it forward with a back at the chicken shack attack to make us all appreciate from where it came.

Add to this list organist Judd Nielsen, a Park Slope Brooklyn native who's jazz loving father and funk loving mother would set him on course to his debut recording, "Blossom Showers". Sit ins with Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Melvin Sparks and early exposure to The Meters when he attended Loyola University in New Orleans would seal the feel.

Nielsen, a La Guardia High School for Performing Arts grad, hooks up here with Queens native Austin Williamson on drums and Manhattan born Solomon Hicks on guitar, to share the special organ combo feel many may have missed the first time around.

"A Bit Of Grease" is a group group composition, confirming Judd found the right soul mates to percolate his intention with boiling conclusion.

"Jimmy Who" indelibly links the listener to the McGriff and Smith nights fans still talk about. It's a real nice vehicle for guitarist Hicks to show his worth.

The title track, "Blossom Showers" was a Nielsen inspired groove from a walk through the cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens (you can see them behind the model on the cover).

"Kingsboro Walk" shows the comfort these three have for this music. Williamson, Hicks and the leader easily pass the baton on this funky stroll.

"Love Forces Of You", a lost love lament, gained momentum through numerous incarnations before arriving at this statement. Again, the trio moves us, and reminds us how a bad time can have a good evolution, building the tune to a soulful declaration.

Closing time at Smoke, a club in New York City, would introduce Judd to saxophonist Matt Carillo from Kansas City, who would get the call for the closer "Pleadin' Time". A slow blues number, and the perfect way to end the time with this recording.

If this initial offering is an indicator, I'm pleadin' for more time with Judd Nielsen. There is certainly more to come.

As a kid, I was happy when I could afford a used Ramsey Lewis, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder or Jimmy Smith record or reel to reel from "Salty's Record Attic" back in Modesto, California. I never dreamed that one day I'd be on stage with or getting lessons with anyone of them. The recordings were lessons themself. Being on the gig or getting personal lessons just about "blew my mind". Thank you all so much.

In the past eight years I've been more active as a producer, drummer and organist. I'm often asked if I perfer playing drums or organ and visa versa. My answer to anyone concerned is both. Drums and organ are deep in my roots.

From the church to the chittlin' circut you'll find both. My love for both instruments are equal. To me, playing an instrument is about communicating through expression on your instrument. It's not about how many notes one can play at 400 bpm or how one can slide an odd meter rhythm into a simple tune or lightening fast fill in one bar. It's about groovin'. As the great Dr. James Polk would say, "Whatever you do, DO NOT FORSAKE THE GROOVE."

I try to play and create music that feels good to me and the listener. That's jazz, soul, funk, rock or whatever. On both instruments, I'm able to express any emotion that I desire. From love to hate or joy to pain. If there is a spiritual or physical emotion involved, I'm able to express it on either instrument.

James Simpson's Jazz GroupSoul Jazz is actually a mixture between Jazz and Soul, and it is not so much a genre of music but a feeling. The quality lies in the catchy harmonies and melodies as well as in the groove. It can be easy listening in the style of Ramsey Lewis all the way to blues-boppin' in the style of Jimmy Smith or Jimmy McGriff. A musical background that invites you to relax, lounge and just feel at ease.

Cory Weeds • O Sole Mio!

  

Even in these trying and uncertain times, there are some professional creative artists who recognize the need to "carry on" and make the best of a bad situation. Saxophonist Cory Weeds is one of those individuals. He is releasing O Sole Mio! Music From The Motherland on his own label, CellarMusic. Weeds has merged his talents as an alto saxophonist with Mike LeDonne's Groover Quartet featuring LeDonne on Hammond B3 organ, Eric Alexander on tenor saxophone, Peter Bernstein on guitar and Joe Farnsworth on drums. Each of these participants is a highly regarded jazz virtuoso in his own right, and has bee, or is, a leader of his own group. Support for this Italian-themed session (great Italian music and/or Italian-American composers such as Henry Mancini, Chick Corea and Pat Martino came from Guilio Recchioni of the Italian Cultural Center in Vancouver B.C.

The first two tracks in this release are both burners. The title track was comes from Naples, where it was written in 1898, and was covered by operatic tenors such as Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti. The band shows how serious they are about swinging with all the members having solos that are both juicy and individual. Mancini's well known theme "Mr.Lucky" gives this smart aggregation a chance to demonstrate their unscripted interplay, which is based on their considerable talent and vast experience. Another well-known number is "Speak Softly Love," easily recognized as the background music from the movie The Godfather. Built around Farnsworth's Latin beat, Weeds' alto opens the offering by stating the theme, after which Alexander's fluid tenor saxophone weaves and darts around the melody in exquisite fashion. Guitarist Bernstein then comes in with some crisp riffs, after which LeDonne's B3 shows off a burly yet fervent tone. This is a terrific take on the number.

Chick Corea, whose heritage is from Southern Italy, wrote "Chick's Tune," which is based on the chord changes from the popular song "You Stepped Out Of A Dream." The band keeps the pace at a high energy level with Weeds' alto leading the way. There is some stellar guitar work from Bernstein and Eric Alexander then takes his tenor sax on a euphoric run. LeDonne's B3 charges out of the gate with soulful depth followed by an extensive drum kit workout from Farnsworth. The band then takes the number out with a repeat of the theme. The final track is "Capricci Di Camere" which originated as bassist Paul Chambers' composition "Whims Of Chambers," which was also the title of his 1957 album from Blue Note. Originally structured by Chambers as a walking bass line for a blues in F, the group restates this same line to open the tune and uses it as a frame from which to explore the number. Each of the players takes a piece of the action with LeDonne at his ebullient best. At this point all one can say is "arrivederci."

Simply one of the greatest guitarists in jazz history, George Benson is an amazingly versatile musician whose adept skills find him crossing easily between straight-ahead jazz, smooth jazz, and contemporary R&B. Blessed with supreme taste, a beautiful, rounded guitar tone, terrific speed, a marvelous sense of logic in building solos, and, as always, an unquenchable urge to swing, Benson's inspirations may have been Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery, but his style is completely his own. Not only can he play lead brilliantly, he is also one of the best rhythm guitarists around, supportive to soloists and a dangerous swinger, particularly in a soul-jazz format; skills he first garnered attention for as a member of Brother Jack McDuff's band in the early '60s. Benson can also sing in a lush, soulful tenor with mannerisms similar to those of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. In a sense, he is the guitar-playing equivalent of Nat King Cole, a fantastic instrumentalist whose smooth way with a pop vocal helped solidify his prowess in the marketplace. It is this combination of singing and guitar playing that has garnered him numerous accolades and chart success, including most notably his 1976 breakthrough Breezin', which topped the pop, R&B, and jazz charts and took home Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Record of the Year. Benson has remained a chart and awards season favorite, releasing more Top Ten jazz albums, including 1980's Grammy-winning Give Me the Night, 1993's Love Remembers, and 2006's Grammy-winning Givin' It Up with Al Jarreau. Along with his original studio albums, Benson has paid tribute to his idols, releasing 2013's Inspiration: A Tribute to Nat King Cole and 2019's Fats Domino- and Chuck Berry-inspired Walking to New Orleans.

Born in 1943 in Pittsburgh, Benson actually started out professionally as a singer, performing in nightclubs at the age of eight, recording four sides for RCA's X label in 1954, and forming a rock band at 17 while using a guitar that his stepfather made for him. Exposure to records by Christian, Montgomery, and Charlie Parker got him interested in jazz, and by 1962, the teenage Benson was playing in Brother Jack McDuff's band. After forming his own group in 1965, Benson became another of talent scout John Hammond's major discoveries, recording two highly regarded albums of soul-jazz and hard bop for Columbia and turning up on several records by others, including Miles Davis' Miles in the Sky. He switched to Verve in 1967, and, shortly after the death of Montgomery in June 1968, producer Creed Taylor began recording him with larger ensembles on A&M (between 1968 and 1969) and big groups and all-star combos on CTI (from 1971 to 1976).

While the A&M and CTI albums certainly earned their keep and made Benson a guitar star in the jazz world, he gained yet more commercial acclaim after signing with Warner Bros. in 1976. His first album for Warner Bros., Breezin', became a Top Ten hit on the strength of its sole vocal track, "This Masquerade," and this led to a string of hit albums in an R&B-flavored pop mode, culminating with the Quincy Jones-produced Give Me the Night. However, jazz remained at the core of his sound, as showcased on 1989's standards album Tenderly, as well as 1990's Big Boss Band with the Basie band, the latter of which featured his guitar more prominently. In 1993, he scored another number one contemporary jazz album with Love Remembers, and followed with several more chart-topping albums, including 1996's That's Right and 1998's Standing Together.

The Latin-infused Absolute Benson arrived in 2000 debuting at number one on the Billboard Jazz chart, and was followed by 2004's number five-charting Irreplaceable. He then paired with vocalist Al Jarreau for 2006's Givin' It Up, which topped the contemporary jazz chart and took home Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.

In 2009, Benson signed to Concord and released Songs and Stories for the label; he followed it with his first primarily instrumental album in 35 years, Guitar Man, in 2011. Two years later, Benson released Inspiration: A Tribute to Nat King Cole, featuring arrangements by Nelson Riddle and Randy Waldman. In 2019, he returned with a second tribute album, Walking to New Orleans: Remembering Chuck Berry and Fats Domino. A concert album, Weekend in London, arrived in 2020.

In a lengthy career as a composer, producer, musician, Gemini Award winner and five time nominee, Lou Pomanti has amassed credits in scoring, song writing, producing and performing on hundreds of musical projects for film, television and albums.

Lou toured the world with Blood, Sweat and Tears and recorded with Anne Murray, Gordon Lightfoot, Platinum Blonde, Triumph, Jeff Healy and Kim Mitchell and a host of others. As well, Lou has worked with internationally renowned producers Phil Ramone and Bob Rock and produced “Soul Ballads” the latest David Clayton-Thomas album for Universal. He also orchestrated strings and horns on Michael Buble’s biggest selling album, Crazy Love, including the hit single, “Haven’t Met You Yet”. Lou performed and arranged on both of Michael’s Grammy winning albums.

Lou has been the musical director of the Gemini Awards, the Juno Awards and the Genie Awards. He was an award winning musical director for the Canadian Songwriters’ Hall of Fame which inducted Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Paul Anka and which featured Lou’s arrangements being performed by Herbie Hancock, James Taylor and Michael Bublé. Lou also composed and produced the music for the closing ceremony of the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Lou is a busy producer of film and television scores for animation, episodic drama, feature film and comedy series. He produces many of these scores in his own recording studio in downtown Toronto.
